And who knows who will be sitting in the wheel cabin next to you? A Viennese woman like Marie Kindl who hung herself outside a cabin during a ride on a rope she held between her teeth in the year 1898? Madame Solange d`Atalide, a late 19th century horsewoman sitting on a horse on the roof of one of the cabins? Or, maybe, Orson Welles' Third Man meeting Holly Martins aka Joseph Cotton and listening to the famous zither tunes by Anton Karas ...

AUSTRIAN BOOKSELLERS LAUNCH THE ILAB POP UP WEEK

BIBLIOPHILE EVENING AT DR. PAUL KAINBACHER RARE BOOKS

Last Saturday, the “heart of literacy” lay in Baden, next to Vienna. Dr. Paul Kainbacher launched the ILAB Pop Up Week in his antiquarian bookshop with a Bibliophile Evening dedicated to rare books on the history and exploration of Africa. The elegant rooms were crowded with books and visitors who enjoyed the lectures given by Walter Sauer and Martin Peter Pfitscher, both renowned authors and leading experts from the University of Vienna.  Walter Sauer, Professor of Economic and Social History, compared Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” with the experiences of Austrian travelers to Central Africa, while Martin Peter Pfitscher, specialist in Ethnology, took the visitors on a photographic tour to Africa seen through the lense of author, adventurer and photographer Oscar Baumann.

Paul Kainbacher closed the Bibliophile Evening with a presentation of rare travel accounts and vintage photographs, and with a fundraising to support the excellent work of UNESCO's Forest Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative (WPDI) in South Sudan.

It was an inspiring evening on the history of Africa to help built a better life for the African children in the future and a perfect start into the week leading up to the ILAB Pop Up Celebrations on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day – from Australia to Asia, South Africa, all over Europe and the United States, on Saturday, 23 April 2016.

Help fill the Empty Bookcases for the children in South Sudan! Each symbolic spine fixed at a symbolic Bookcase Poster at an ILAB Pop Up Event sends one book to a child in South Sudan.  A donation of $ 15 purchases a set of 12 books for a classroom, $ 500 purchases 45 sets for a rural community!

ABEBOOKS BLOGGERS VISIT THE ILAB POP UP FAIRS IN VIENNA AND CHICAGO!

THE ILAB POP UP BOOK FAIRS ON UNESCO WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY IN THE PRESS:

"April 23 is going to be another special day for booklovers. UNESCO’s 2016 World Book & Copyright Day will feature book-related events on a worldwide scale with ILAB’s contribution being a series of pop-up book fairs displaying rare and collectable books from the four corners of the Earth.

ILAB (International League of Antiquarian Booksellers) is repeating a successful programme introduced in 2015 on World Book Day that put rare books in front of thousands of people. Last year ILAB activities raised more than 10,000 Euros for UNESCO’s Forest Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative (WPDI), which provides literacy assistance to children in South Sudan.

This year’s series of pop-up book fairs is promising to be even better. They stretch from Australia to the United States and from the United Kingdom to Russia, and numerous other European countries."

POP UP IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA, ON UNESCO WORLD BOOK & COPYRIGHT DAY, APRIL 23, 2016

THE "HEART OF DARKNESS" ...

… lies next to Vienna at Dr. Paul Kainbacher Rare Books on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day 2016. With a Bibliophile Evening dedicated to lectures and books on travel and exploration from Austria into the world the Austrian antiquarian booksellers will launch the ILAB Pop Up Week on 16 April 2016, from 5 to 7 pm. Paul Kainbacher invites colleagues and collectors to his bookshop in Baden (Vienna), where Walter Sauer and Martin Peter Pfitscher of the University of Vienna will talk about famous 19th century travels of Austrian adventurers to Africa. Joseph Conrad’s well-known novel “Heart of Darkness” leads directly into Central Africa during the time of the Belgian colonization. Walter Sauer, Professor of Economic and Social History, compares Conrad’s stories with the experiences of Austrians, who travelled to Central Africa or lived there at that time. By chance, the Vienna born explorer Oscar Baumann became a photographer in 1892 through a generous gift: he was given a Kodak camera which enabled him to take pictures of the country and the people he met on his travels in search of the source of the Nile, and later during his time as an ambassador in Sansibar. In the second lecture, Martin Peter Pfitscher, specialist in Ethnology, will show Africa through the lense of Oscar Baumann, while Paul Kainbacher will close the Bibliophile Evening with a book presentation and a fundraising to support the great work of UNESCO's Forest Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative (WPDI) in South Sudan.
