AUSTRIAN BOOKSELLERS LAUNCH THE ILAB POP UP WEEK

BIBLIOPHILE EVENING AT DR. PAUL KAINBACHER RARE BOOKS

Last Saturday, the “heart of literacy” lay in Baden, next to Vienna. Dr. Paul Kainbacher launched the ILAB Pop Up Week in his antiquarian bookshop with a Bibliophile Evening dedicated to rare books on the history and exploration of Africa. The elegant rooms were crowded with books and visitors who enjoyed the lectures given by Walter Sauer and Martin Peter Pfitscher, both renowned authors and leading experts from the University of Vienna.  Walter Sauer, Professor of Economic and Social History, compared Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” with the experiences of Austrian travelers to Central Africa, while Martin Peter Pfitscher, specialist in Ethnology, took the visitors on a photographic tour to Africa seen through the lense of author, adventurer and photographer Oscar Baumann.

Paul Kainbacher closed the Bibliophile Evening with a presentation of rare travel accounts and vintage photographs, and with a fundraising to support the excellent work of UNESCO's Forest Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative (WPDI) in South Sudan. 

It was an inspiring evening on the history of Africa to help built a better life for the African children in the future and a perfect start into the week leading up to the ILAB Pop Up Celebrations on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day – from Australia to Asia, South Africa, all over Europe and the United States, on Saturday, 23 April 2016.

Help fill the Empty Bookcases for the children in South Sudan! Each symbolic spine fixed at a symbolic Bookcase Poster at an ILAB Pop Up Event sends one book to a child in South Sudan.  A donation of $ 15 purchases a set of 12 books for a classroom, $ 500 purchases 45 sets for a rural community!

The Viennese antiquarian booksellers are breaking all records. A busy place with lots of visitors and the most ILAB Pop Up Book Fair pictures shot on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day 2015!

It’s 6 pm in Germany, I have been blogging for 14 hours, and the UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day is not yet finished. The Mexican Wave from Australia to Tokyo, Moscow, Cape Town, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Denmark, London moves forward to Vienna, Munich, Königstein and Paris, where right now, the next ILAB Pop Up Fairs are beginning.

At the Literature Museum, which opened a few days before, the Viennese antiquarian booksellers are welcoming their guests.

10.50 am, Vienna – ILAB on top of the Austrian capital!

A year ago, it was ILAB President Norbert Donhofer’s idea that ILAB should take part in the worldwide celebrations on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day. Now, on 23 April 2015 from noon to 3 pm the ILAB Pop Up Book Fair at Norbert Donhofer Rare Books on top of Vienna will be one of over 30 worldwide ILAB events on that day!

Everything has been prepared for the ILAB Pop Up at Norbert Donhofer’s new office – Taborstrasse 64/Top 18!

And even more: His son Matthias has already donated 50 € for schoolbooks given by UNESCO to South Sudan! Very many thanks to the ILAB President and his son for hosting such an amazing event on top of Vienna!
