POP UP AT THE OXFORD BOOK FAIR ON 23 APRIL 2016

NEARLY 100 BRITISH BOOKSELLERS IN OXFORD HARNESS THE POWER OF 1,800 COLLEAGUES WORLDWIDE ON UNESCO WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY

On Saturday April 23 nearly 100 booksellers in Oxford will take part in a unique worldwide event. For 24 hours a worldwide chain of rare book events will occur. Starting on the East Coast of Australia running through Asia and Europe and ending on the West Coast of the United States, booksellers in 15 countries and nearly 30 locations will hold quick and often quirky events that celebrate rare books, autographs and manuscripts, maps and other paper items. Booksellers will show and talk some of the rarest and most interesting items they own while raising funds for literacy. 

“Fill an Empty Bookcase and change our world!” Oxford Book Fair manager Tom Lintern-Mole from rare booksellers Antiquates Ltd said today. “We are raising funds for the Forest Whitaker Initiative for Peace and Development’s work in South Sudan. Literacy rates in South Sudan are appalling. 84% of women are illiterate and 70% of men - what hope is there for these individuals, this country or even the world as whole with literacy rates like this?” 

We invite book lovers, librarians and anyone who cares about literacy to come to the fair at Oxford Brookes Wheatley Campus, Wheatley, OX33 1HX, on Saturday 23 April from noon to 6 pm. For a small amount you can purchase a symbolic book spine and help fill the symbolic Empty Bookcase. Just £ 3 buys a book and £ 15 buys a whole set of 12 specially written for the children of Sudan addressing issues they face in daily life. In 2015 Pop Up Rare Book Events organized by the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) raised enough to buy 1,930 books and 500 pens and paper. This year we hope to raise even more!

The Oxford Book Fair, a Premier Fair of the Provincial Booksellers’ Association (PBFA), is one of the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom. Over 100 dealers offer tens of thousands of rare, collectable and second-hand books, maps, manuscripts and ephemera at Oxford Brookes Wheatley Campus on 23 and 24 April 2016. 

So, if you will be in Britain on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day 2016, Oxford should be your destination!

THE ILAB POP UP BOOK FAIRS ON UNESCO WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY IN THE PRESS:

"April 23 is going to be another special day for booklovers. UNESCO’s 2016 World Book & Copyright Day will feature book-related events on a worldwide scale with ILAB’s contribution being a series of pop-up book fairs displaying rare and collectable books from the four corners of the Earth.

ILAB (International League of Antiquarian Booksellers) is repeating a successful programme introduced in 2015 on World Book Day that put rare books in front of thousands of people. Last year ILAB activities raised more than 10,000 Euros for UNESCO’s Forest Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative (WPDI), which provides literacy assistance to children in South Sudan.

This year’s series of pop-up book fairs is promising to be even better. They stretch from Australia to the United States and from the United Kingdom to Russia, and numerous other European countries."

THE ILAB POP UP BOOK FAIRS ON UNESCO WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY IN THE PRESS:

"From a pop-up bookshop in Vienna’s giant ferris wheel to book fairs in cities across South Korea, antiquarian booksellers around the world are preparing to host a 24-hour run of events later this month to raise money for children in South Sudan. To mark Unesco’s World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April, 1,800 members of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) are preparing a series of pop-up fairs featuring rare books. A mix of presentations, exhibitions, lectures and performances, the events will take place from South Africa to Russia, and New York to Munich, and will raise money for Unesco and actor Forest Whitaker’s literacy projects in South Sudan.

ILAB president Norbert Donhofer, who came up with the idea for the pop-up fairs last year, said: “The purpose of ILAB’s participation … is to spotlight rare books and bookselling while raising money for what is at the very foundation of all we do – literacy.”

What do Skype, a film star, literacy problems in South Sudan, and two women dealing in rare books and manuscripts have in common? They are the driving force behind a chain of worldwide events to create a more literate world. This April the booksellers of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) will again celebrate UNESCO's World Book and Copyright Day with a chain of events one after another around the world.  Organising a chain of worldwide events is not easy as Australian Sally Burdon and German Barbara van Benthem, both members of ILAB, have found, particularly as they live 16,285 kilometres apart and all the organisation was done by Skype and email.  Not easy, but it can be done!

THE RUSSIAN ANTIQUARIAN BOOKSELLERS POP UP AT BIBLIO-GLOBUS IN MOSCOW

The Guild of Antiquarian Booksellers or Guildia Antikvarov-Knizhnikov (GAK) was established in 2012 as the Russian antiquarian booksellers'association which already became a member of ILAB in the same year. With less than ten rare book dealers the Guild belongs to the smaller associations united under ILAB's roof, but its members - many of them former students of the Moscow State University of Printing Arts - have great expertise, they are young, innovative and very active on the international market.

One of the Russian booksellers, Olga Shibalkina, runs Biblio-Globus: the biggest bookshop in Russia with over 250,000 titles in stock and about 3500 books, prints and objects of art in the antiquarian book department. And here, at Biblio-Globus in the city centre of Moscow, the Russian rare book dealers will pop up at UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day, 23 April, with a fascinating series of events initiated by three women booksellers: Olga Tarakanova, Professor at the Moscow State University of Printing Arts and President of GAK, Vice-President Ekaterina Kukhto of Biblionne and Olga Shibalkina of Biblio-Globus.

Visitors and booklovers of all generations will enjoy a variety of activities. Professor Olga Tarakanovo will give a talk for children on books and bookbinding. Illustrator and publisher Victor Goppe will speak about and present beautiful examples of livres d'artiste. During the day, several other lectures will be held, and a special exhibition will be opened documenting the practice of bookbinding. Finally, at the very end of busy and inspiring day, bibliophiles will have the opportunity to buy rare books about books in a special auction held by the members of the Guild of Antiquarian Booksellers.

BOOKS ROUND MIDNIGHT

SWEDISH BOOKSELLERS TURN UNESCO WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY INTO A NIGHT OF THE BOOKS!

On 23 April 2016, the Stockholm Culture Night rolls out the purple carpet to celebrate art, music, dance and literature throughout the Swedish capital. Visitors will lose themselves in breathtaking performances and exhibitions held all night at public places, museums and institutions. As part of this awesome series of events and while the amazing great chain of ILAB Pop Up Fairs will span around the world on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day the Swedish booksellers will pop up at the Royal Swedish Academy of Art to present treasures from the history of printing in Sweden and - as their colleagues from Australia to Asia, Africa, Europe and the America -  to raise money for UNESCO’ literacy projects in South Sudan.

Six antiquarian booksellers

– Mats Petersson of Centralantikvariatet, Mats Rehnström, Ulf Egelius  of Antikvariat Antiqua, Pontus Soldén of Rönnells antikvariat, Charlotte Du Rietz, and Lorenz Hatt - 

will hold an ILAB Pop Up Fair at the Library of the Royal Swedish Academy of Art together with bookbinders, a paper conservator and members of the Royal Library. Passers-by will have the chance to dip into the world of bibliophily. They will admire rare books and manuscripts presented by the Swedish booksellers along with precious bindings shown by Swedish book artists. The Head of the Royal Academy will speak about the library and its history and show some of the most noteworthy items from the library’s collection. A couple of renowned Swedish scholars are invited to talk about their favourite books and their most memorable collecting experiences, while the booksellers and bookbinders will be there for bookish conversations on building and preserving book collections.

The Library of the Royal Swedish Academy of Art, founded in 1773 by King Gustav III, is the largest and oldest institution of its kind in Sweden and the perfect venue for all who are interested in books to meet up with experts and to enjoy a unique night of the book!

CATCH-PENNY-PRINTS & CHAPBOOKS IN LUND – SCHOOLBOOKS FOR SOUTH SUDAN

A VERY SPECIAL ILAB POP UP FAIR IN SWEDEN

Lund is one of the oldest and most charming cities in Sweden. It is famous for its historical buildings, for its University (founded in the year 1666), for numerous bicycles in the streets, its rich cultural scene – and for its bookshops. Pierre Dethorey, member of the Swedish Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association (SVAF) runs one of these bookshops. Akarps antikvariat at Kalkstensvägen 21 has one of the largest stocks of rare books in Scandinavia. And it is home to a very special treasure all book people will immediately fall in love with: a stunning collection of over 200 Swedish chapbooks and catch-penny-prints.

For this year’s UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day Pierre Dethorey will organize a special exhibition of this beautiful, funny, colourful and extremely rare bibliophile treasure. Right now he is preparing an exhibition of the highlights from his collection which he will show in his shop on 23 April 2016. While browsing the wonderful catch-penny-prints and enjoying the unique chapbooks displayed at Akarps Antikvariat, visitors will be invited to help buy another – highly important – sort of books for the children in South Sudan. For each symbolic “book” bought to fill an “empty bookcase" poster visitors are making a donation to the UNESCO and Forest Whitaker literacy projects in South Sudan.
