ILAB POP UP BOOK MARKET – HAARLEM, NETHERLANDS

UNESCO WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY, 23 April, 2 to 5 pm

Haarlem, founded in 1245, has been the historical centre of the tulip bulb-growing district for centuries and bears the nickname "Bloemenstad" (flower city). Since the Middle Ages, Haarlem, which lies on a thin strip of land above sea level known as the "strandwal", is one busiest and richest places in the Netherlands, widely known for its cultural and commercial life, the linen and silk industry and its beer brewing tradition. In Haarlem you will follow the historical traces of the Dutch Golden Age back to the times when the Dutch were one of the world’s predominant trading and seafaring nations, and even further to the period when the inhabitants of Haarlem defended their city against the Spanish invasion. Here exactly you will find the Dutch antiquarian booksellers on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day.

On 23 April 2016, from 2 pm to 5 pm, the ILAB dealers of Bubb Kuyper Auctions and Antiquariaat A.G. van der Steur will hold an ILAB Pop Up Book Market at Kruisstraat 3 in Haarlem, just beside Kruispoort – the old city gate which was blown up by the Haarlem inhabitants in the year 1573 to protect themselves against the Spanish invasion. Inmidst this beautiful historical location, the Dutch booksellers will offer rare and fine books, maps and prints - some of which you might never have seen before. Jeffrey Bosch of Bubb Kuyper Auctions will be present from 4 to 5 pm to estimate your own bibliophile treasures. And as all the ILAB booksellers on that day across the world, the Dutch colleagues will sell “symbolic books” to fill "empty bookcases" for the school children in South Sudan.

Antwerp, Bibliotheek Permeke, 23 April 2015 - A review in pictures

Bibliotheek Permeke in Antwerp (Belgium) is an inspirational place. Built 10 years ago right in the middle of a deprived part of the city it was a farsighted first step in the city’s endeavour to clear the slums and improve the lives of its people. Now, a decade later, every day thousands of readers visit the library - ideally by bike - to borrow books, use the internet, to read and get information and drink coffee in the glass pub. Bibliotheek Permeke is a symbol that books change lives and that the power of reading is vital and essential.

On April 23 Erik Tonen and Peter Everaers met the library visitors in the foyer, raised funds for the UNESCO literacy projects in South Sudan and showed rare and fine books to the readers they would otherwise very likely never have seen.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands - More impressions from the ILAB Pop Up Book Fair in Haarlem

The Dutch dealers are amazing, their events on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day clearly belong to the highlights of 23 April 2015. The ILAB Pop Up Book Fair at Haarlem Station, waiting room at perron 3a, was organized by Antiquariaat A.G. van der Steur, Veilinghuis Bubb Kuyper and Antiquariaat De Vries en De Vries. They wrote to us:

"Lots of train travellers found it a lovely surprise to be able to visit a pop up book market just before entering their trains. Unfortunately no delayed trains (unusual for The Netherlands) so mostly short visits with enthusiastic people. The free book and print valuation was a great success. People had to stand in a line to wait for their turn. Many people liked to donate ..."

It's Monday 27, and we are still receiving pictures from the ILAB Pop Up Book Fairs worldwide, there are still tweets and posts in social media and press mentions, for example in Sweden or Cape Town or such exotic places as the Philippines, also on Book Patrol, Flavorwire and Fine Books and Collections. A list with press links will be on the blog in the course of this week.

The Guardian published a great article about the ILAB Pop Up Book Fairs and created an extra site where visitors could upload their pictures. A wonderful pictorial review of what was going on on 23 April.

And here is something special: a video of the Dutch booksellers and their floating Pop Up Book Fair in Amsterdam.

1 to 6 pm, Amsterdam - An ILAB boat for booklovers

Amsterdam is famous for its 17th century canals, called "grachten". On one of these boats the Amsterdam booksellers from Antiquariaat Kok, Die Schmiede, Antiquariaat Spinoza and Antiquariaat Brinkman held a floating ILAB Pop Up Book Fair today. The boat went from Amsterdam harbour to the city center over the Prinsengracht to Roking, opposite of the Special Collections Department  of the University Library, and landed finally at the Singel, the innermost canal of the old city of Amsterdam.

However, at first, the ship broke down before they could set sail, so while waiting for a replacement the Dutch dealers started selling the symbolic books in the street. Luckily another boat was found, and finally the wonderful journey could begin.

5 pm, Antwerp - 152 euros for South Sudan from Antwerp

The ILAB Pop Up Book Fair at Biblioteek Permeke in Antwerp has closed now. The antiquarian booksellers Erik Tonen and Peter Everaers collected 152 euros for the UNESCO literacy projects in South Sudan!

4 pm, Haarlem - The book train has arrived at Haarlem Central Station

Meet the Dutch antiquarian booksellers at the ILAB Pop Up Fair at Haarlem central station. The ILAB affiliates of Antiquariaat De Vries & De Vries, Bubb Kuyper Auctions and Antiquariaat A.G. van der Steur offer rare and fine books, maps and prints - some of which you might never have seen before - , and also symbolic books to fill the "empty bookcases" for the school children in South Sudan.

2.15 pm, Groningen - A walk through Folkingestraat, the ILAB Pop Up Book Fair Street 2015!

Lyseth Belt and Theo Butterhof of Antiquariaat Isis have been preparing for the great day for weeks! On Twitter, on their websites, and in the press they promoted their great idea to not only hold an ILAB Pop Up Book Fair but to create a whole ILAB Pop Up Book Fair Street. Flags were printed, posters were fixed, and the decorations for the many shopping windows in Folkingestraat were arranged.  See how the ILAB Pop Up Book Fairs on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day 2015 are celebrated in Groningen, Netherlands.
